Who's Who at OGSLP?
Sharon Tate
Department: Claims
Title: Review Specialist III
Years with OGSLP: 15
How do your daily duties directly impact OGSLP's customers?
I review the defaulted and specialty claims lenders have submitted to OGSLP for purchase. We help our lenders and servicers comply with federal laws and regulations when they’re requesting a claim reimbursement and we’re available to answer any questions our lender, servicer and school customers may have about the claims process. We also work closely with industry groups such as NCHELP to ensure we have the latest information about claim-related topics and best practices.
What advice would you give to someone in our industry who's new to working with student loans?
I’ve worked in the student loan industry since I became the manager of the Student Loan department at Tinker Federal Credit Union in 1979. Because we must comply with many policies and regulations, this business requires great attention to detail. Fortunately, there are many tools and resources available for FFELP partners, including the Common Manual and our Policy, Compliance and Training Department. If I feel overwhelmed, I remind myself to feel good about the work we do, because we’re helping students reach their goals!
What do you find most challenging about working with student loans?
Keeping up with federal regulations challenges me. Thankfully, I relish a challenge! From interest rates to loan default parameters, so much has changed since I started working in this industry. It's important to rely on the helpful information and resources provided by reliable, supportive organizations like OGSLP.
What are some of the unique services your department provides our customers?
The Claims department’s purchase of defaulted loans allows our lender customers to dedicate funds to new loans for new borrowers! We support industry standards and programs that promote efficiency, like the Common Claim Initiative, and we’re proud of the exceptional service we provide.
What are your hobbies or interests?
I love to listen to music and attend concerts, and I enjoy working in my flower garden. My husband and I plan to travel when we retire, which is an exciting prospect.
