Making Work "Work": Resources for Busy Professionals
Smother burnout before it leaves you in ashes
Do you ever feel stressed out because of your job? (Would it make more sense to ask you if you ever DON’T feel stressed out because of your job?) Seriously, if you do, it’s time to take a step back before you burn out. Take these positive steps to maintain your effectiveness and can-do attitude:
- Find time to play. People on the verge of burnout are usually spending too much time in the workplace and not enough time with family and friends. If you can’t take a few days off, even one day in a relaxing environment with no computers, text messages, e-mails or phone calls can help you return to work feeling refreshed and ready to conquer your task list.
- Get physical. You’ve heard it over and over again, but that’s because it’s true. We all need to work some physical activity into our day to release tension. While you’re exercising, focus on something besides work; otherwise, you’ll just create more stress.
- Set realistic objectives. Stress largely stems from feeling overwhelmed. If you’re feeling snowed under at work, sit down with your boss and prioritize your projects. After you’ve categorized your tasks, attack them one at a time.
- Use your support network. Everyone needs people inside and outside of work to turn to for support, encouragement and candid feedback. Spend time with your support network - these are the people who provide the advice and guidance that motivates you the most.
